A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Market
Santa Fe Weekend – August 19-21

Ready for a culturally-rich, weekend getaway in one of the Southwest’s most diverse communities? Why not travel in your own vehicle or carpool with others to our first night’s base at the Homewood Suites just off US Highway 285 and about 15 minutes north of Santa Fe. It’s near the Buffalo Thunder Casino & part of the Pueblo of Pojaque. After checking into the hotel and freshening up, we will carpool to the Santa Fe Opera grounds to begin our evening with a backstage tour. We’ll dine on site at the Dapples Pavilion surrounded by lovely gardens. Dinner is a sumptuous buffet with two wine selections, a dessert and cheese course, and a 25-minute presentation about the evening’s performance — Die Fledermaus, by Johann Strauss, Jr. According to the Metropolitan Opera, this supreme example of a Viennese Operetta…

“ …centers on a magnificent masked ball given by a Russian Prince. The three-act journey from boudoir to bedroom to jail provides ample opportunity for farce, humor and genuine human emotion. By all accounts, a delightful introduction to opera as well as a favorite of experienced opera attendees.”

On Sunday morning, we’ll drive the short distance to Santa Fe, leave our vehicles at the Inn of the Governors’ parking garage, and begin wandering through The 96th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market. This event is the largest and most prestigious juried Native Arts Show in the world and the largest cultural event in the Southwest. And…The Inn of the Governors is within perfect walking distance of many of the market events. Once we are checked in, we can return to our rooms for breaks or tea and sherry in the hotel lobby. The time and place for dinner is up to you; the hard part is choosing only one of Santa Fe’s many excellent restaurants.

Relax on Monday morning and take your time to enjoy Santa Fe as long as you like. Return to Cortez as your own personal schedules permit.
