Places I Remember Exhibition Running through September Read Brugger /Artist Statement I started taking photographs in the early 1970s while living in Chicago. From then until 2015, when my wife Heidi and I moved to Cortez, I always had a full B&W darkroom to work in. Early in my career (1977-1983) I documented Boston’s community gardens and natural areas for various local and national non-profits, with my photos appearing in many books and periodicals. After moving to Maine in 1983, I joined a coastal town’s artist co-op and showed work there regularly and at other mid-Maine venues. My photographs are in both private and publicly accessable collections in the US and Europe. The images in these photographs were created by exposing silver halide crystals imbedded in film and paper to light. They are truly archival and have a range of light and depth unequaled by ink-jet or other computer-generated images. The photographs in this exhibit, Places I Remember, are the best of my best. You will see that many are singular images and the remainder have very few copies (and those have different dimensions). I feel honored to have this opportunity to share them with you. I hope you enjoy them. |

Erny Zah & Benton Yazzi Art Exhibition August 2024 Erny Zah is Jicarilla Apache, born for the Black Streak Wood people. He is originally from Sawmill, Arizona and currently resides in Farmington, New Mexico. He has been capturing the Native American world through his lens for more than 20 years but just recently has started to show his photos to the public. As complex and diverse as Native American life is, Zah’s intention is to highlight a realistic portrait of life today for Native Americans which blends the lang standing traditions and customs juxtaposed against modern reality. Benton Yazzi is a self-taught Navaho painter-illustrator. He is the son of the Tachii’nii (Running into the Water) and the Bit’ahnii (Folded Ams People) clan. His artistic ability was developed during his childhood of isolation and poverty on the Navajo reservation. Many nights were spent drawing on scrap pieces of paper by kerosene lamp. All of his paintings are personal expressions of his life—hardships and his longing to express the glory of the Creator. His paintings reflect the old ways of his people (The Dine) with modern and abstract symbolism mixed in to portray how he and his people live in two worlds—one on the reservation, the other in a fast moving and modern society. His illustrations have been published in books currently being sold on Amazon: Shaman and the Water Serpent and The Navajo and the Animals. Benton is currently teaching and using art to help Native Americans in recovery while pursuing a studio of his own. |
